July 10 - August 26, 2012

I am showing my “Subway Goddess Pageant” series of sculptures, setting the atmosphere with NYC Water Tower series, at the fabulous Gallery @ Penn College of Technology this summer, along with 4 other artists who use mosaics to express their concerns.

TERRA INCOGNITA (Lands Unknown) aptly describes the cross-boundary quests five mosaic artists bring to their studio practice. It was in the Unknown areas of the old maps that artists were given free reign to fantastical imagination, often reflecting more of the current interpretations of the world around them than the known areas did.  Whether in its traditional usage in cartography, as in “the unknown land on the other side of…”, or in its wider metaphoric form, as an adventure in exploration of the unknowns in our world and ourselves, 5 award-winning mosaic artists will each present a body of work that reflect their uncharted explorations of the present using an ancient medium, as well as their uncharted exploration of that ancient medium itself.  These artists’ individual curiosity drives them to cross boundaries of disciplines, incorporating anthropology, archaeology, art history, astronomy, cartography, earth sciences, history, literature, social studies, and women’s studies.  At the same time, they are pushing the boundaries of the medium of mosaic itself, and of their preferred materials.
